With over 36 years of experience, I am a ceramist living in Gower, dedicated to producing unique and functional ceramics. My passion for pottery and sculptures has led me on a journey of creativity and self-expression.
Hand thrown pottery is at the heart of my craft. Each piece is meticulously shaped and formed by hand, using traditional techniques passed down through generations. The process begins with a lump of clay, which is carefully centered on the potter’s wheel. With skilled hands and a keen eye, I shape the clay into various forms, such as bowls, vases, and mugs.
One of the joys of working with ceramics is the tactile nature of the material. As I work the clay, I can feel its texture and respond to its malleability. This intimate connection between the artist and the medium is what makes each piece truly unique.
Once the initial form is created, the pottery undergoes a series of drying and firing processes. This ensures that the clay reaches its optimal strength and durability. After the first firing, the pieces are ready for glazing. I carefully select and mix glazes to achieve the desired colors and finishes. The glaze not only adds aesthetic appeal but also seals the pottery, making it functional for everyday use.
While functional pottery is my specialty, I also enjoy exploring the world of sculptural ceramics. These pieces are more expressive and often push the boundaries of traditional forms. Sculptures allow me to experiment with different shapes, textures, and techniques, creating one-of-a-kind art pieces that evoke emotions and tell stories.
Living in Gower, I draw inspiration from the stunning natural landscapes that surround me. The rugged coastline, rolling hills, and vibrant flora and fauna find their way into my designs. Each piece reflects the beauty and serenity of this unique corner of the world.
